COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents in Guthriesville reported a black bear roaming lawns and overturning trash bins early on May 9 — several witnesses captured the animal on security cameras and found its paw prints, prompting local officials to advise securing trash and removing bird feeders. East Brandywine Township and the Pennsylvania Game Commission stressed that such wildlife encounters are rare and urged caution to prevent future visits.  VISTA Today

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Rite Aid filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on May 9th and said it will sell assets including eight lease locations in Chester County, where these stores will soon close. The company listed 1,244 properties for sale nationwide & has begun layoffs in other states without filing a WARN Act notice in Pennsylvania.  VISTA Today
  • The Phillies have sued West Chester startup LifeBrand for $890,000 & extra costs because the firm did not pay for its final marketing deal year. Former CEO Thomas J. Colaiezzi said the startup faced money troubles after a funding collapse, which led to its shutdown.  VISTA Today

  • Gerald “Jerry” Parsons—chairman of CTDI and longtime supporter at Brandywine—will deliver the keynote address at Penn State Brandywine’s commencement today at 10 a.m. in the Commons/Athletic Center gymnasium, where 160 bachelor’s and 5 associate degrees will be awarded.  VISTA Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Pennsylvania House passed House Bill 96 to protect older adults and incapacitated individuals from losing their homes because they cannot pay property taxes, with a bipartisan vote of 201—2. The bill will now move to the state Senate for further consideration.  MyChesCo

HEALTH NEWS

  • Independence Blue Cross is now accepting nominations during National Nurses Week for its Celebrate Caring campaign—honoring extraordinary nurses in the region with submissions open until May 31. The company will select three winners in July and August who will receive a $500 gift card, a $2,500 donation to a nonprofit of their choice and the Sunshine Award in memory of Paula Sunshine.  VISTA Today
