EDUCATION NEWS

  • Moravian Academy won the 34th Pennsylvania State Academic Competition on May 2 at the Pennsylvania State Capitol—earning a $2,000 scholarship by scoring 95 points against 17 teams, with Unionville at 90 and Cedar Crest at 85.   • A WalletHub report showed that smokers in Pennsylvania spent about $4,022 a year on cigarettes and $3,989 on healthcare, which adds up to nearly $193,070 and $191,452 over a lifetime—placing the state 15th in the nation for smoking costs.  VISTA Today

  • Chester County officials launched a campaign to protect over $68 million in federal funding that supports key public services amid looming budget cuts. Last week, Commissioners Maxwell, Moskowitz, and Roe with CEO Byerman met with federal lawmakers and national groups in Washington, D.C. — the county is also developing a tracking tool to monitor at-risk funds.  MyChesCo
  • State Representative Chris Pielli's House Bill 355—which is designed to protect children from abuse by those in positions of authority—passed unanimously in the Pennsylvania House on Tuesday. The bill, which would impose harsher sentencing for mandated reporters convicted of sexual assault, now moves to the state Senate for review.  MyChesCo
